While they desperately battled against the category four hurricane, it showed no signs of abating. Then Hurricane Raymond changed direction, stalking them like prey.
It shows the yacht capsizing after Hurricane Raymond hits, it shows Sharp injured, and it shows Ashcraft in charge of getting them home.
But real life, as it often is, was much more harrowing. When the hurricane hit, Sharp insisted Ashcraft get down below deck as he secured himself with the safety harness.
I was never going to fall in love again. When Ashcraft wakes up in the movie she finds Sharp injured but still alive and in the water.
In real life everything was broken, smashed and scattered, the cabin was half-full of water, the masts were broken clear off and the sails were waterlogged and floated useless nearby.
Ashcraft investigated further and found the navigation system, and the emergency position-indicating radio device, were broken.
What happened in the next 41 days was equally inspirational and heartbreaking. Ashcraft rigged a makeshift sail from a broken pole and fashioned a pump to keep the cabin from flooding.
Left with only a sextant, a navigational instrument, and a watch to help her navigate the 1, miles to Hilo, Hawaii she suffered not just from hunger but also a head injury and a severely damaged boat.
In a interview with Chicago Tribune, Ashcraft explained how she survived on peanut butter and canned food - from fruit cocktail to sardines - for 41 days after the hurricane hit.
Ashcraft sailed the wreck to land using the sextant, her hair matted with salt water and only her own thoughts to keep her going. Mourning her fiance and weak from her own blood loss, she was catatonic for two days.
I just followed it. For the next few days she got her bearings and rigged her sail to get herself in position so she could use currents she hoped would take her to Hawaii.
I just really had a hard time. But that survival instinct [while at sea] just kicked in. It helped me to focus, to keep myself on track.
She had a plan. Ashcraft wrote: "On the horizon I saw an isolated cloudlike shape. Could it be Hawaii? I was afraid to see people again, get back into society.
What was going on? A fluid dynamic that ensures this narrative of endurance is never difficult for the viewer to endure, while also drip-feeding information about the couple and their individual histories in just the right order to keep us both engaged and distracted.

Less than three weeks into the trip, Ashcraft and Sharp encountered Hurricane Raymond, which produced foot waves and mph winds. On October 12, Sharp told Ashcraft to go below deck to take a break, but the boat capsized and Ashcraft was knocked unconscious.
When she awoke a day later, Sharp was gone and his safety line was dangling over the side of the boat. At that point, Ashcraft had to make any repairs she could and attempt to sail the boat to land.
She pumped water out of the cabin, rigged up a sail using an extra jib, and began navigating manually, using only a sextant which is a navigational device people use while sailing and a watch.
Determining that San Diego was too far away, she aimed for Hawaii—still a journey of 1, miles. She completed the trip in 41 days and survived by eating canned food and peanut butter.
Obviously, the movie version of Sharp survives well past the arrival of the hurricane, but only sort of. In Red Sky in Mourning , her memoir about the ordeal, Ashcraft says that she felt as though some sort of voice was guiding her.
Whether this trick is successful or not is up to the viewer, but for her part, the real Ashcraft seems to be fine with it.
Despite having undergone a horrific ordeal on the open ocean, Ashcraft still sails today.
The high seas had been a part of her life ever since. Tami met Richard in Tahiti, and they spent six months together sailing their own boat, but were then hired to deliver a luxury yacht, the Hazana , by friends of Richard.
The plan was to sail from Tahiti to San Diego, a 4,mile trip. Despite trying to outrun it by changing course, what was by now Hurricane Raymond also unexpectedly changed direction, and the young adventurers found themselves sailing directly into the heart of the Category 4 hurricane.
The Hazana was battered by foot waves and, while making the boat watertight, Oldham was flung into the hold, knocked unconscious and only awoke, groggy, weak from blood loss from a gash in her forehead and in agonizing pain, 27 hours later.
Though the storm had abated the luxury yacht was now a wreck. Its radio and electronic instruments were all destroyed. While there was canned food and water in the hold, the only navigational tool left was a traditional sextant.
The next six weeks were a gruelling battle for survival. Having managed to rig a makeshift sail, hallucinations began to set in — including an island thought to be Hawaii appearing on the horizon one day, only to disappear the next.

Written by STXfilms. Not the typical movie i would pay to go see at the cinema, but Moviepass changes everything and the wife dragged me in.
Must say i was glad she did. Up til now ive not really like Shailene, except for Snowden. But this suited her down to the ground i think. Movie was somewhat of a romance, a little suspense, good use of flashbacking and an unexpected twist.
